PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY


His Majesty, King D. Manuel I, in 1497, prossecuted the jews and now the Portuguese Law is providing the chance of the descendants of the Sephardic Jews to acquire Portuguese nationality, without any limits. 


If the procedure is done properly it is one of the shortest ways to obtain the Portuguese Nationality.

 

PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW


Birth Certificate

  • Legalized birth Certificate
  • if the certificate is foreign, legalization must be done through an apostille or visa from the Portuguese consulate
  • if the certificate is not in Portuguese, you must also provide the certificate translated into Portuguese and certified. 
  • The certificate can be dispensed if the birth is registered in a Portuguese civil registry office and that registry, the year, and the registration number are identified.

Your criminal record

  • Your criminal record must be issued by the foreign country(ies) where you have lived from the age of 16.
  • Must be translated and certified into Portuguese.

 

Proof of Judaism

  • Proof of Judaism, performed by a Chief Rabbi, letter of an orthodox Rabbi recognized by organizations with halachic credibility, teudat nisuin of the parents, ketubah, membership of and orthodox Community, etc.)
  • This entity must have the status of a religious legal person (such as the Israeli Community of Lisbon and the Israeli Community of Porto), or a document proving that it belongs to a Sephardic Jewish community of Portuguese descent.
